Amazon is a company originally from the USA, its main market is e-commerce together with cloud computing services.
It is headquartered in the city of Seattle in the US state of Washington. Amazon was one of the first companies to offer and sell goods on the Internet on a large scale and its motto is ‘A to Z’.
It has managed to create completely independent websites for many of its markets around the world such as
Germany
Austria
France
China
Japan
United States
United Kingdom and Ireland
Canada, Australia
Italy
Spain
Netherlands
Brazil
India
Mexico
This enables it to offer the specific products of each of those countries. In other countries where Amazon is also present, it performs technical support functions, such as Costa Rica, since that is where it centralises its customer focus throughout Latin America as one of the largest companies in this country with a workforce of no less than 7,500 employees.
Amazon is the largest online retail company in the world, where you can find practically anything you need as it is very sure that someone is selling it.
The Amazon company was founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos after he left his previous job as vice president of DE Shaw & Co. in the same year, that company was one of the biggest companies on Wall Street.
After his resignation, Bezos decided to move to Seattle and it was there that he began the structuring of a specialised business plan through the Internet, which in time became what we all know today as the company Amazon.com.
How the idea of Amazon was born
The founder of Amazon, being a Wall Street insider, after reading a report that analysed the Internet market and its future, discovered that he was projecting 2,300% annual growth in web commerce.
After learning this, he decided to create a small file list of products that he thought would sell very fast and very easy when marketed through the Internet with what he got a list of only 20 products but it was still a very long list so he continued to work on it to narrow it down to 5 possible successful products for the company he was looking for.
Eventually, after exhaustive research and selection, he decided that the perfect business model for what he was looking for would be books as the worldwide demand for literature was enormous.
This decision was a complete success due to the low prices of the books it offered in addition to the huge amount of literary titles it had in stock.
The Amazon bookstore was so successful that in just the first two months of its existence. The company was sold in more than 45 different countries including the United States. Its sales were up to $20,000 per week.
New business models
But Amazon.com was never satisfied with the model it found, so on 11 October 2016 it announced its plans to build physical shops and develop kerbside food collection points.
This new business model was called ‘Amazon Go'(Amazon to go), which was opened to Amazon employees in Seattle in 2016.
This new shop is based on the use of a variety of sensors and can automatically load an Amazon buyer account when leaving the shop, there are no payment lines.
Although it took a long time, the shop was finally opened to the public on 22 January 2018.
Requests
But not everything was as straightforward as it seems, there were other incidents such as Barnes & Noble suing Amazon on 12 May 1997, claiming that Amazon’s claim: ‘The world’s largest bookstore’ was a mistake, the plaintiff stated: ‘It’s not a bookstore at all, it’s a book agent’.
Then it was Walmart’s turn to sue Amazon on 16 October 1998, this group claimed that Amazon had stolen its trade secrets because it had hired former Walmart executives.
Both issues were resolved through out-of-court settlements.
And today Amazon
It is an interesting and profitable business model, having fulfilled 20 years on 15 May 2017 since it began trading on the Nasdaq.
El Amazon’s market value is estimated to be close to $460 trillion, making it the fourth largest and most successful company in the S&P 500 index (Standard & Poor’s 500), located right between the companies Microsoft and Facebook.
Amazon’s customer base grew in the decade from 2000 to 2010 to 30 million people.
Amazon.com is characterised as a retail file site primarily with a revenue model.
Amazon.com’s earnings come from charging a percentage of the total sales price of each item placed and offered on your website.
Amazon currently allows companies to advertise their products by paying their fees to be listed as products.
Amazon also owns:
Alexa Internet
a9.com
Shopbop
Internet Movie Database (IMDb)
Zappos.com
DPreview.com
